If you are searching online for “torque converter problems” or “what problems can a bad torque converter cause,” then this post is for you. Converter problems can occur as the part ages, so a replacement can be necessary. This is a checklist of what you can do when you are having issues with your torque converter.
How To Diagnose Torque Converter Problems
Even if the torque converter is new and just purchased, it can still have trouble working properly. Poor acceleration due to low stall speed is one of the most common complaints. Here are the steps to follow when attempting to fix this issue.
Check Camshaft
The stall range needs to match the range of the camshaft. Generally, the stall speed should be set about 500 rpm higher than the camshaft’s starting rpm. The solution here is to either get a new camshaft or select a different torque converter that matches the specs.
Check Gear Ratio
A new converter must compliment the gear ratio of the vehicle. Gear ratios are meant to match the energy it takes to get your vehicle to move. Lower flash stalls should match higher numerical gear values. This means if you have higher gear ratios you will, of course, need lower stall torque converters.
Check Weight Of Vehicle
Heavy vehicles require higher stall speeds, while lightweight vehicles need lower speeds. It is possible that the torque converter you picked does not work well due to your vehicle’s weight. Consider choosing a more appropriate sized converter.
Check Engine Torque
The torque your engine puts out affects stall speed dramatically. Look up the manufacturer’s specs for your engine’s torque so you can get an accurate reading on how much torque the engine is putting out. Stall speeds need to be 500-750 below peak torque rpm of the engine. Feel free to contact Roadrunner Converters with any questions.
